Parent Letter #26 - End of Year

posted Jun 27, 2011, 5:53 AM by Felicia Ippolito

Dear Parent/Guardian:

As the school year comes to a close, we reflect on the months that have passed with much pride.  It has been a productive year for your children and the teachers have seen your children make great strides.  Improving reading levels and writing collaboratively with classmates has proven to be successful.

We have begun to plan and prepare for next year and below I have outlined some important items for your reference:

Ø  We will continue to use the Oncourse Parent Portal (website) as a tool to provide you with updates on your child’s performance.

Ø  We will be using a new school website  Our former site will no longer be available.  Our new site will have many of the same features, as well as samples of student work.  Please visit the site often for all updates.

Ø  As you begin to plan the summer vacation days for you and your family, visiting family and friends, traveling across the city, outside the city and to other states or countries, we have included a plastic baggy entitled “Summer Artifacts” to collect special mementos from your child’s summer.  We’re asking that your child bring this “Summer Artifact” baggy back to school when they return in September as these items will help them complete their first writing task in September.  Students in all grades (K-5) will receive a baggy and have been informed of the importance of coming to school in September with these special mementos.  Things to include in the baggy could range from plane tickets, tickets to a game, photos from places they visited a shell from the beach, a menu (paper) from a restaurant, vacation souvenirs or anything that your child feels will remind them of their summer’s special moments.

Ø  This year we participated in a pilot program implementing the DOE’s new Common Core Standards.  We’re excited about the work we’ve completed to date and teachers are working hard to ensure that all children have the necessary skills needed to be successful at PS 108Q and as they move into middle school, high school, college or career ready.

Ø  The first day of school will be Thursday, September 8, 2011.  School hours for the September 2011-2012 school year will be the same:

o   Monday thru Thursday –

§  Kindergarten & Grade 1          8:00 am to 2:40 pm

§  Grade 2 to Grade 5                8:00 am to 2:50 pm

o   Friday –

§  Kindergarten & Grade 1          8:00 am to 1:50 pm

§  Grade 2 to Grade 5                   8:00 am to 2:00 pm

*The silver doors located on 109th Street will open at 7:45 am for children to eat breakfast all school days.

Ø  Please encourage your children to read during the summer vacation.  It is important to keep their reading skills active so they are prepared when they come to school in September.

Ø  Please remember that you must have proper identification to enter the building.  You will be asked to present a valid NY State ID or current passport every time you enter.  Please understand it is the law you cannot enter the building without it.

Ø  PS 108Q has a school uniform policy.  Students should wear navy blue pants, skirt or jumper and a light blue top (button down or polo).

Ø  IMPORTANT: As you know busing on the first day and the first two weeks is challenging.  The school expects to receive updated lists of students’ bus eligibility in late August/early September.  The school’s policy will remain the same as we make this difficult transition – only the children who come to school on the bus will be able to take the bus home, in this way we can ensure parents are aware that the same bus who picked their child(ren) up in the morning will be taking their child back to the drop off site.  Parents of children who will be promoted to the third grade in September should be aware that bus eligibility requirements change from second to third grade.  You should be receiving a letter over the summer from the Office of Pupil Transportation notifying you if your child is no longer eligible.  We will work with all parents to expedite busing  but please be reminded the bus company does not report to the school.

Thank for all or your support.  It has been a great year.  Have a happy and healthy summer.  We’re looking forward to seeing you in September.
