Parent Letter #13 - Friday Dismissal

posted Apr 6, 2011, 10:43 AM by Felicia Ippolito

Dear Parents/Guardians:

In September the Chancellor announced that schools may use one of the extended day time blocks for teacher team meetings.  This time will be used in a structured way to look at data, student work, to incorporate the Common Core Standards into the curriculum, to examine and enhance teacher practice and to design instructional plans that augment individual student learning. PS 108Q has elected to hold Teacher Team Meetings on Friday afternoons.

As a result, the following will go into effect on November 12th:

  • Dismissal for all students will remain the same Monday through Thursday at 2:50 pm.
  • Students will be dismissed at 2:00 pm every Friday beginning November 12th, 2010.
  • This includes all bus children.

As you are aware, our school hours changed in September (8:00 to 2:50) to reflect a longer day, 6 hours and 50 minutes Monday through Friday, as compared to last year, when your child received 6 hours and 20 minutes of instruction per day. Even with the early dismissal on Fridays, all children will continue to receive 1½ hours more of instructional time this year than last year.

We know this change may result in some dilemmas for parents, and we are prepared to work with you. But it’s important to remember that as state mandates become increasingly more challenging, we must provide quality time for teachers to work together in order to continue to provide your child with the best opportunities to achieve academic excellence. We believe that the end result of Teacher Team Meetings will be evident in the quality and level of personalized instruction your child will receive.

If you have any questions or concerns please contact us. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.
