Dear Parents/Guardians of 4th Grade students:

As you know students face many challenges when they transition to Middle School such as moving from class to class, having several teachers instead of just one, and organizing materials for several classes.  In order to prepare our 4th Grade students we are piloting a departmentalization program for 2014-15 fifth grade classes to make a smoother transition.

For the 2014-15 school year:

Your child will be assigned a homeroom.  Teachers will work in teams of four.  Each team will consist of:

·         1 Math teacher

·         2 Reading teachers

o   Shared Reading

o   Guided Reading

·         1 Writing teacher

In September, you will get the opportunity to meet your child’s teacher team.  During the four scheduled parent/teacher conferences for 2014-2015, you will meet the entire teacher team.  All classrooms will be on the fifth floor and will be clustered together so there will be minimal movement.  The students will be supervised during transition periods.

Supply lists will be reflective of the departmentalization so you may see some new items listed.  If we are able to, we plan to purchase the students a daily planner to help them to stay organized.

Over the next week, we plan to meet with our fourth grade students to talk about the new structure for next year.  They will get the opportunity to go to the fifth floor to see the rooms.

We have also have changed the morning arrival site for the 2014-15 school year.  Our plan at this time is for 5th grade students to use the brown doors on 108th street as the morning arrival site (our current 4th grade dismissal site).  Students will go directly to their homeroom classes on the fifth floor.  We will keep you apprised of any changes.  We are so excited about the changes and we look forward to a great school year!
