September 2014

Dear Parents/Guardians,

On behalf of the entire staff I want to welcome you back to the PS 108 School Community.  To the parents who are new to school, we send you a warm welcome to the PS 108 school family.  We’re excited to begin the new school year and we look forward to a strong, unified partnership.

As you know this upcoming school year, September 4th, 2014 our school day will look differently: All children will attend school from 8:00 to 2:20 Monday to Friday (5 days a week).  This time change is the outcome of the new UFT contract.

Below I’ve outlined the Department of Education Citywide Instructional Expectations (CIE):

Ensure knowledge of students and their work, and use this knowledge as a starting point for learning;

Integrate policy into established, clearly articulated instructional focus; and

Develop a culture of collaborative professional development that enables school and individual development

Additionally, this year parents/guardians will have four (4) opportunities to meet with your child’s teacher during the school year:  September 16th, 2014, November 13th, 2014, March 19th, 2015 and May 13th, 2014.  The November and May conferences will be afternoon and evening sessions and the September and May conferences will be evenings only.  We have not received specific data regarding State Assessments administered earlier this year to children in grades 3-5, but June preliminary data suggests the majority of our students showed growth.  Once actual data is released that information will be forwarded to you.  You will also have access to viewing your child’s s individual data in the ARIS Parent Link, using your personal login information. Please contact Mrs. Ippolito in the main office if you have any problems accessing the site.  For parents of incoming Kindergarteners and any new admits, Mrs. Ippolito will contact you regarding your access codes to ARIS.  Remember, it’s important to print a copy and review the results with your child.

Over the last two years we have embedded the Common Core Standards, with an emphasis on raising the ‘rigor’ of instruction in all grades. The city’s goal is to engage all students in rigorous units of study in literacy and math. Our teachers continue to work in teams to ensure all instructional plans are aligned to the Common Core.

We are committed to support your child academically and socially to ensure each child graduates P.S.108Q with the skills and tools necessary to excel in Middle School and beyond.

I want to extend my personal thanks in advance for all your support.  A school’s success is only possible with the collaboration of parents and teachers. Your participation in your child’s education is critical to their success. Together we can and will make a difference!
